The #1 Way To Get MORE Leads in LESS time

Do you want to know the best way to go to the next level with your business growth and income?

I’m about to show you the #1 way to get more leads that become paid clients, in less time and how you can earn a leveraged income.

First, I want to share with you what happened when I first moved to Sydney.

If you were with me in December 2012, you would have found yourself standing in a queue outside the Sydney Convention Centre, now known as the International Convention Centre.

I’d seen an ad on Facebook advertising Mike Tyson as their headline speaker, marketed as an entrepreneurial event.

I was wearing business attire and there were a whole lot of other business people in the queue also that looked to be 18-year-old dudes who were carrying their boxing gloves.

There were thousands of people there and there was speaker after speaker sharing on real estate and how to trade shares on Forex. By mid-afternoon, Mike Tyson still had not come out and people started to get annoyed and started to leave.

By late afternoon, the convention centre cleared out and there was hardly anyone left. But I stayed because I wanted to learn as much as I could. Two guys came on the stage called Jeffrey Slater and Kane Minkus, who had just been on tour with Tony Robbins.

They said they had a whole presentation planned, but because there were not many people left they were going to do a Q & A session instead.

They asked people to raise their hand if they had a question. My hand just went straight up in the air before I could even think.

Saying Yes to Opportunities

The mic runner ran up to me and I didn’t even have a question. I had trained myself to say yes to opportunities, and my hand went up without having anything to say. When he got to me, I stood up and I told them that I really wanted to be a speaker and I would love to have their advice.

They invited me to come onto the stage. I remember standing on the massive stage and they gave me the mic and asked me to share one piece of advice with the crowd.

Run at Your Fears

Sweating and nervous, I took the mic and said that my one piece of advice is to run at your fears because if you run away from them, they keep chasing you.

I’d recently moved countries from London, back to Auckland and then to Sydney. I had barely any money or friends in this new Country so I knew discomfort pretty well.

But I knew I wanted to be a speaker and I knew that I had to follow my heart and my dreams.

At that moment standing on the stage, I realised that speaking at the Sydney Convention Centre was on my vision board and had been there for eight years prior.

On that day, part of that dream was realised. I know I wasn’t the speaker on the day, but two years later I applied to be a speaker at the International Convention Centre for a fitness convention that I had attended many times.

I didn’t think I was qualified enough and I didn’t think I’d be accepted. But I was! In 2017, I spoke at the International Convention Center, and that was the dream coming true from my vision board.

When I stood up on stage the first time at the Mike Tyson conference, I was nervous, shaking and my face was bright red.  But in 2016, I was actually the speaker and I was calm and confident.

The Mike Tyson conference was the day that I realised I wanted to have a platform. It felt so good, even though it was nerve-wracking and I’m an introvert and struggle with being in the limelight.

I was doing a lot of one-to-one training and coaching at the time. But I realised that if you want to leverage your time and make a big impact, then one-to-one is just not going to cut it.

You cannot make a big impact if you’re only working one by one people.

If you want to leverage your time and speed up the process to grow your business, you need to be able to speak one-to- many.

Waking Up Your Identity

Success starts with waking up our identity.

One of my favourite speakers, Benjamin J Harvey talks about waking up your future belonging. It’s like an identity, where there’s a part of you that ‘wakes up’ and realises who you want to be.

That could be an author, a mother, a spiritual advisor, a teacher,  trainer, or an educator, for example.

In 2013, I was sitting in a visionary leadership conference with John DeMartini and Benjamin J Harvey. Again, my future belonging was awoken, as Ben as he said something that really stood out to me.

He said if you’re willing to get on a platform, (it doesn’t necessarily mean physically standing on a stage), but if you’re willing to do the hard thing that most people are not willing to do – public speaking – you separate yourself from your competition.

People on a Mission Have no Competition

If you’re willing to step out and face your fears of public speaking, and if you’re willing to talk about what you love and share your message with the world, you will stand out from your competition.

I definitely had a massive fear of speaking in public. I didn’t even think that I would be able to speak to a room of 10 people in a group workshop, let alone a massive group.

When Ben Harvey shared the impact that you can make from going from a one-to-one model to a one-to-many model, it awakened something inside of me. Instead of thinking “Who am I to do that?” I started to believe “Why not me?”

Why not me? Why could I not do that?

When Ben asked if there were people who wanted to make that change in their business, I put my hand straight up. I put the $495 deposit down for their ‘Present Like a Pro” course, which cost $5,000 at the time.

I didn’t have the money. I had rent coming up, but I found the money. You always find the money for things that are important.

I’ve well and truly made that money back now – I’ve turned that $5,000 into a six-figure coaching business, doing what I love, using mostly the one-to-many model.

The Power of Presenting

The one-to-many model is the #1 way to get more leads in less time.

Running events is an amazing way to get clients and a great way to improve your credibility, improve your expert status, and to leverage your time.

 

And now it’s super easy to do it online.

I resisted doing this as a consistent strategy for ages. But when I finally made a decision and take action, it turned my business around. I’ve now run over 100 online events and 100 in-person events and it’s been the one thing that has made the biggest difference in growing my clients.

If you run an online event, you can speak to 50 or 100 people during that time, instead of speaking to people one at a time.

Running events speeds up the time it’s going to take to reach that many people. If you want to accelerate your success, it’s a no-brainer.

The reason many of us have avoided events for so long is because of fear.

It could be fear of what people might think or fear of failure, fear of judgment, fear of being an imposter, or fear of not knowing enough.

When you decide to show up, despite the fear and when you decide to be the kind of person that does a one-to-many model, rather than a one-to-one model, and you provide great value, success is inevitable.

You can really accelerate and explode your business growth.

I’ve had a growth explosion during COVID-19. I was doing mainly in-person workshops, but I pivoted fast and started doing online workshops.

Holding online events means people from other states and countries can attend.

I recently did a Grace Lever online event that 700 women from all over the world attended and it was brilliant.

I also crewed an Authentic Education online presentation course and coaching course, and 79% of the people said they preferred the online environment, which I found fascinating.

Leverage Your Time, Speed Up Results, Get More Leads and Paid Clients

The one-to-many model is the best way to leverage your time, speed up your results, get more leads and paying clients in a short amount of time.

I’m sure you would love to be able to share a message talking about something you love and have lots of people listen to it. It’s a great way to make money when talking about what you love.

If you want to get clients, you can really only do two things: You can write and get people through your written content, or you can speak and get people through your spoken content, whether that be on video or on audio.

You’re not going to build a business if you don’t create content. Business is about people exchanging value to get a return of investment. So many business people are unwilling to face their fears and step up to make content.

It’s a step-by-step process. You need to learn the skill of presenting, learn to talk on Facebook Lives, and learn the skill of creating influential content.

You can’t just show up and ramble your way through an event. There is a formula and a specific structure you need to follow to make sure that people engage and get value from what you’re sharing.

There’s also a structure to getting them to turn up to your event, which is the first hurdle and that’s where you use marketing.

I predominantly teach my clients marketing and sales, both in written content and in presenting at live or online events and workshops.

You’ve also got to be able to keep them engaged and make sure that they are inspired to take action. It’s about inspiring people to be able to go out there and apply what they’ve learned and that takes a specific structure and formula.

7 Mistakes People Make When Running Online Events

Have you ever thought that you’d like to run online events?

Do you currently run online events and would like to make them better?

Running online events, like webinars or virtual workshops, is one of the fastest ways to attract your ideal clients, especially right now.

Having run over 100 online events, each one getting me clearer and clearer on what works, I’ve tested and measured the best ways to do them effectively and successfully.

There are so many things that you have to think through prior to an online event, like how to best use technology, what marketing to do, how to effectively structure your talk, and how to get people to turn up for your event.

Over the years working with so many different people, I’ve noticed that there are 7 core mistakes that people make when it comes to running online events.

There are some critical things that people get wrong and in this video and article, I unpack them, so you can avoid making the same mistakes.

Before I go into the 7 main mistakes, I want to first share with you 4 reasons why running online events is SO effective:

1 – Online Events Help You Grow Your Email List

Your email list – your database of people – is one of your most valuable assets in business. Obviously we don’t own anyone’s details on social media, Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn, so it’s important to build your list.

We do this by having landing pages where people can opt in to your event, so that you now have their email address so you can continue to give them value and share other offers with them.

There are always people who sign up for a workshop and don’t turn up, but you’ve got their details and you can continue marketing to them and nurturing them in the future.

2 – With Online Events You Can Speak to More People at One Time

If you’re only ever doing one-on-one coaching, you’re very limited to the impact that you can have.

If you want to make more money, help more people faster, have a bigger reach and make a difference to more people, then online events are a beautiful way to do it.

3 – Online Events Can Help You Get People’s Attention Fast

Holding online events it’s a fast way to get and hold people’s attention. It’s very hard to hold someone’s attention by just a social media post, a blog or even a Facebook Live video.

If you run an event people get to know you, like you, trust you and build rapport with you because they have longer exposure to you, so you can inspire and educate them.

4 – Online Events Raise Your Positioning and Credibility

Your positioning and credibility are increased because not everyone is willing to take the risk of putting themselves out there.

If you’re willing to do this, it puts you more in the position of being an expert. It also enables you to educate and inspire people to take action.

Not everyone’s ready to buy straight away and they need your education so they will see the benefit they will receive when they make a change in their life.

A lot of people are resistant to change, so you can use events to educate people and them overcome their limiting beliefs.

Running online and live events has opened up so many opportunities for me and I get most of my clients through running events.

Online events are not going to go away, in fact they will only grow and ramp up – so now is the time to get in!

Now you know WHY you should be holding online events, here are the 7 mistakes I’ve found people make when running online events:
1 – Not Tailoring the Talk to the Audience

When running online events, I’ve noticed that some people speak on what they want to share, but what is so important is that you tailor the message to your ideal clients.

So you’re not being general or broad, but you’re solving the exact problems that your ideal client has.

I’ve never given a talk where I haven’t asked people for some prior input, like a survey. I’ve asked them what they want to learn about, what their main challenges are, what their dreams and goals are.

At one company I spoke at, I had one of the board of directors sit down and interview all of the instructors and staff. I listened to the recordings and created the talk based on that.

You don’t want to try and just wing it and guess.

If you are giving people what they want, if you’re speaking their language, then they’re going to get so much value from it.

You need to do your research by talking to people, going to networking events, seminars and talking to and listening to people to find out their needs.

You can poll your Facebook community, get people to complete a survey before a coaching session or at the end of a workshop or webinar.

2 – Failing to Set Frames

A frame is something that you build an idea around that you want people to have. For example, when people come to an event, you’ve got to quickly set the frame so everybody is sitting within the same frame.

There’s different types of frames, and they can include things like; the rules about the event, how you want people to behave within the event, and also beliefs that you want people to have through the event.

When people come to my workshops or my webinars, I always have a slide that says, ‘I’ve been at the top like the most successful people’. And then I’ll give a list of things that successful people do.

I put things like, ‘Successful people show up ready to learn, they stay focused, they take lots of notes…’

I’ll read through this list and that is setting a frame of how I want people to show up in that event. And if I miss that slide the event can be a bit chaotic.

I don’t want people to come and just be chilling out. If they have a question I want them to write it down, or put their hand up or write it in the chat box.

There are also frames are around how you want people to behave. There are also logistical frames, so I always have a slide that talks about making this a world-class learning environment and that we keep everyone’s information confidential.

I also let people know they will be put in breakout rooms. There’s also a disclaimer about being able to have participant’s photos taken and things like that, so you set all those frames at the beginning.

The other frames that are really important to mention are beliefs that you want your participants to have. Often I will show my private community Inner Circle’s manifesto which says ‘In the Inner Circle, we are on-mission action-takers. We operate from a growth mindset, we free ourselves from blame, excuses, and denial, we choose to value people, contribute, pursue our vision and loads of fun…’ etc.

This is setting the ‘frame’ that shows participants that in this event, we don’t focus on our excuses, we have an entrepreneurial mindset – we show up, we give things a go, we never give up and we see challenges as an opportunity.

3 – Not Adding Enough Value

I find that people often will not plan their event enough, where they give people ideas or concepts that they haven’t heard before, or they maybe haven’t heard it in a sort of way before. They haven’t really thought through what’s going to be truly valuable.

Value is what gets someone to take an action right away. Are the facts you’re presenting inspiring and educating enough to make people take action? If not, then it’s not valuable.

Value also means spending time practicing, thinking through what is going to be really useful for people. People love examples and stories of others who have taken a concept and put it into action in their life.

People also love templates and they want their questions answered. They want to be able to share with other people. This is all part of adding value.

Value is not squeezing in the content. I once heard someone say that if you squeeze in the content, you squeeze the audience out!

You want to make sure that your content is valuable, that people can apply it right away. And you need to give people plenty of time to think through things also, so they can digest the toolkit of ideas you’ve given them.

4 – Giving Away Too Much Information

This is probably the one that I have found the hardest. I just want to share so much of what I know because I’ve studied this stuff for over a decade and I’ve been in business for 17 years.

If you give too much information, it could be like standing in front of a fire hose to get a cup of water. It’s actually doing your audience a disservice if you give away too much information, because they can’t apply it.

If you say to your audience that they will learn all they need to know from this event, they will leave thinking they know everything and that’s not possible, so it’s doing them a disservice. They also won’t buy from you because they’ve got everything they need.

You also need to create curiosity. It’s called the Zeigarnik Effect and it’s about opening loops in people’s minds, where they actually realise they’ve got to spend more time with you as the educator.

Show them how many hours worth of knowledge there is to know about that subject and one way they can get that knowledge is through using your coaching.

5 – Speaking Without Structure

People want organised knowledge and people pay for organised knowledge. When you’re creating an event and you show up and try and pour out everything you know about the topic, that is a mistake.

You don’t want to just give people a whole heap of content or information and leave people to have to figure out what to do with it. You want to make it digestible and palatable for them, by breaking it down into steps or pillars.

The best speakers in the world have organised the information into a structure. If you think that they’re just winging it and speaking intuitively, believe me – they’re not.

It’s also good to refer people back to the beginning of your talk. You don’t just take them from here all the way from the start to finish, it’s good show them where they are in the system.

You also want to make sure that when you’re delivering your content, you use diagrams and images, so people can see a clear visual of what you’re explaining and show how things fit together.

6 – Being Unprofessional

This goes without saying, we all know that we need to be professional, but what does that look like?

Being professional means:

  • Having a nice quiet environment and making sure your audio is good and clear with no background noise
  • Making sure that you’ve got a good lighting system
  • Setting your computer or tablet up at eye level
  • Making sure you start on time
  • Ensuring you have nice professional PowerPoints, if you’re using slides
  • Practicing your talk before you deliver it

All of this is part of being professional.

This doesn’t mean you can’t be personable though. It really helps to add humour and your personality and flavour to it. Professionalism is not perfectionism. It about giving the most value while still being yourself.

Remember that everyone who comes to your online event or talk knows at least 50 close people that they can potentially refer you to.

Always be thinking that it’s not just the people that show up, but those people potentially know 50 others that you can reach.

Even if just 2 people show up, always give those 2 people your 100%, because if one person makes a change from what you’ve shared, it’s worth it right? And they will tell their friends.

7 – Focusing Too Much on Themselves

People are so self-conscious, they put off running events because they’re so concerned about what people might think of them and they are scared of judgment.

There are fears around if the technology doesn’t work and fears if no one turns up. I’ve had all these fears and different limiting beliefs myself.

Instead of focusing on the fears, focus on the good result possible, not the negatives.

I’m completely detached from who comes to my events. I care about the people attending as people, of course, but I believe that whoever turns up are the people who are meant to be there.

I don’t focus on money, I focus on doing your best work and preparing well for the event and give it your all.

I put aside days and days to create my events. I give myself feedback after events on all the things I could do better next time and I take on board all the feedback that I get from people who attended.

Turn the focus away from yourself and onto focusing on the value you can offer people.

That’s how you grow your business.

How To Overcome Your Fear Of Being Visible Online

Do you find yourself procrastinating on putting up that blog post, recording a Facebook Live video or sharing your expertise on social media?

Maybe you post occasionally, but you don’t post boldly and position yourself as an expert.

In this video and blog post, I share with you how to overcome your fear of being visible online.

What do I mean by being visible online?

I mean posting boldly and authentically – on social media, on your website, on all the different platforms that you can be out there in the online world.

Stepping up and owning your space.

Taking authority in your area, in your niche.

Positioning yourself as an expert.

I know that a lot of people have fear around this. I definitely did.

I knew I needed to post more … but I had so much fear coming up.

Thoughts like…

“Who do I think I am?”

“Why would people listen to me?”

“I don’t know enough yet”

“What if people don’t like what I share?”

‘People are gonna find out that I don’t know everything about this topic and therefore what’s the point?

“I can’t put myself out there until I know more”

Impostor syndrome. It’s a killer of dreams!

So, why is it so important to be visible online?

Well, if you’re a small business owner, if you’re wanting to increase your clients, if you wanted to grow your business, if you’re wanting to have a real impact in the world and help more people, you really need to master the ability to put yourself out there to be visible.

That genius zone that you have the gifts that you have. You really need to step up and be out there regularly, consistently and not hiding behind your laptop.

I was talking to a friend today and we were discussing how we used to hide behind our laptop. We used to stay in our comfort zone and we just thought there was something wrong with people not signing up with us.

We thought we were doing all we could.

We were creating content but actually, we weren’t really putting ourselves out there in a way that our full potential called for.

You can kind of dabble a little bit, post a little here and there, put up a motivation quote now and then… but when I’m saying being visible – I mean stepping up, owning a space.

I mean having an opinion, having a voice, sharing your message and not hiding behind things that aren’t really your full essence of what you’re here to do on the planet.

What you’re here to actually achieve and the purpose of why you’ve been born.

I struggled with fearing being visible for years and I learned some really cool strategies that have helped me to be able to just consistently get out there despite the fear.

So, I’m going to go through 3 strategies that you can use to be more visible to show up in a big way. To do what you know you’re here on this planet to do and make the impact that you’re here to make.

1. Identify the belief that’s causing the fear

The first thing that you want to do is identify the belief that’s actually causing the fear. Identify the belief that’s causing the fear.

There’s some kind of belief that you have that’s driving this fear of not wanting to play full out. Not wanting to say everything that you wanted to say. Not wanting to fully own the whole message. You might just be bringing parts of yourself to the world. You’re just showing a little bit.

I’m not saying show everything about your whole life, but about your message. You’ve got to know what’s effective – what’s going to be the best outcome to the people that are following you.

There’s a belief that’s driving to fear us so, whenever we have a belief, A belief is basically every thought that we accept as truth. Every thought that we accept as truth is a belief.

You don’t have to believe every thought that you think. Just because a thought pops into your mind, we don’t have to believe it. We don’t have to play to it.

We can choose whether we want actually believe that thought.

So, if you have fear, it’s coming from a thought and you want to identify what is actually the belief.

So once you’ve identified the, you might think “I know what’s causing the fear. I’m actually scared that someone is gonna see me online who knows that in my past I’ve done things incongruent to actually what I’m sharing, the message that I’m sharing now.”

I’m saying this as an example because I was talking to a client today and it’s exactly what she said.

And the truth is that is true for all of us because where this life there is mess, when there’s humanity, there’s imperfection.

All of us live out of alignment with what we’re teaching at some point in time, because we’re human.

So if you put this bar on yourself that you have to be perfect all the time, it waters down your message. That’s gonna keep you really small. That’s gonna stop you from being visible.

So you’ve got to find the belief.

Maybe it’s that you feel like you don’t know enough, that you’re not smart enough. Maybe you feel like you aren’t pretty enough to get on camera. Or that you don’t know enough about technology.

Maybe the belief is that you need to go into another course.

Maybe you think you need to have 5 successful clients and have testimonials before you can actually say that you are an expert in this space.

The truth is, you can start helping people right away. You don’t need to have a certain amount of people in your email list or a certain amount of facebook followers.

You can literally start helping people now.

I used to have a belief that I had to have a certain amount of followers, and a certain size of email list before I could start teaching other people. That’s not true. I can help my clients right now, because I know how to teach them what I’ve learned and applied myself.

Sometimes we wait until we’ve got things all perfectly together. And the cost of that is, people miss out on your genius. They miss out on what you can bring out to the world to help them because you’re letting this fear hold you back.

Maybe you’re believing that you’re believing something that’s keeping you small. It’s keeping you invisible. It’s stopping you from stepping up. You need to identify what I need to believe in order to take action.

I’ve talked to many people who feel like they have to have all these steps in place before they go out on social media and share their message or own their niche.

It’s stopping them putting that first authentic message out, or that first Facebook Live, that first post actually teaching on your area of expertise or your topic.

That belief doesn’t serve you or your tribe.

Also, sometimes, it’s about getting out there – even though you still feel the fear.

When you can actually really learn how to control your mindset around it, that actually reduces the fear.

I’m not gonna try and pretend that the fear completely goes away, because it actually doesn’t.

The fear is there every time we push it out of comfort zone, every time we go and up that level.

That fear is gonna try and keep us safe. And that’s a good thing, you know, it’s just part of our brain that wants to keep us safe. So actually, it’s good to accept that the fear’s never gonna go away.

You just have to learn to take action despite the fear.

Remember the fear is driven by a belief. Identify the belief, write it down.

 

2. Identify the belief needed to take action

What belief do you need to believe in order to take action?

Maybe you need to believe that perfection doesn’t exist.

That it’s all about progress, not perfection.

That there are people out there benefit from what I’m sharing even if I don’t have 10 clients. Even if I’m not perfect.

Let’s say you’re a Health Coach and you think “I need to lose weight and I need to be at my perfect size before I can be a health coach because people are going to judge me otherwise”.

You need to know that your approach to someone has nothing to do with your own personal results. That is making it about you.

 

Yes, some people might judge the material, of course, there are gonna be some people out there who judge.

But if you think about all the examples of coaches who are helping people and they are not as good as the player.

So, for example, Tiger Woods, his coach is not as good a golfer as Tiger Woods, but he’s an excellent coach.

There are multiple examples in Sport where the actual coach is not better than the player but they’re just excellent at coaching.

So just because you haven’t reached a certain level doesn’t mean you can’t coach people in it, cause you absolutely can!

If you make it all about your results and you haven’t to achieve perfection before you can help others, you’ll be waiting a long time and people will be missing out.

It’s just something that you gotta decide “What belief do I need to have to get myself out there and be visible?”

For example “I need to believe that what I say is valuable and worthy of people listening to it and responding to it”.

If you don’t believe that, people pick up that energy because you’re not owning the worth. Build your self-worth.

You may need to write out a list of reasons why you deserve it to do that. Write then reasons why what you have to offer is valuable.

I recommend 80 minimum reasons (100 is better) WHY – you really need to live out of the belief you need to take action.

For example, I need to believe that it’s not about perfection, it’s about being visible. That someone is going to get helped with what I have to share in the world.

That simple belief I need to operate from and that fuel that drives you, that’s gonna be such a more powerful fuel than operating out of fear.

Think – “What do I actually need to believe in order to get visible?”

Well, first of all, I need to believe that if people judge me or not, that’s none of my business.

I need to believe that if people think I’m not good enough, it’s none of my business. I’m not gonna let that person who might judge me, stop me from all these people getting benefit from.

For me, I was really worried about what my ex-boss might think. So all these people that could benefit from what I offered missed out because of this one person who wasn’t even my ideal client that I don’t even see anymore – that’s actually quite ridiculous.

When you figure out who’s the SPECIFIC person that you’re most afraid of, you can do practical things like not share it to them.

You can customise your Facebook, so you’re actually not showing it to these certain people that make you feel like that.

Or you can say, this is me. It’s too hard to pretend to be someone else and all these people are missing out if I don’t do it.

 

3. Strengthen your why

If you’ve done any kind of reading about leadership, about business, so many of them come back to this “why” and what is your ‘why’? Simon Sinek talks a lot about it. Many great successful people talk about it.

Sometimes we lose track of our why. If we are thinking about ourselves and thinking about what we are gonna get out of it, we probably won’t be motivated at all or inspired to take action and actually be out there and be visible.

But if we are thinking about our why, about the stronger, bigger reason, the reason that is beyond us or bigger than us, that is gonna motivate us.

That is gonna fuel us and drive us to actually take action and do hard things, do uncomfortable things.

I used to hate, doing Facebook Lives. I felt so awkward. I was judging myself so much. So fearful of other people judging me. You know if I said um’s and uh’s. And if I didn’t get it all perfect.

I’ve never done a perfect Facebook Live, ever! Always had some kind of stumble, always had some kind of, I haven’t expressed myself so eloquently as I wanted to.

But people still get help from my Facebook Live and I get messages all the time saying that “It was really helpful” or “I’ve applied that” or “This was exactly what I needed to hear”.

If I had let that desire for perfection hold me back and make me fearful of being visible and showing up online even when I didn’t feel like it. If I succumb to that fear, I would never have got better at it.

Competence builds confidence.

When you feel more comfortable with something, you feel more confident, right?

We have to show up and be visible and not get it perfect and let go of that fiction. And a really good way to do it is to make sure we understand why it’s so important.

You might know your why, logically know your why, but we need to strengthen the why.

With strength in it, through repetition, through reminding ourselves all the reasons why it’s so important.

What you can do with this strategy is literally write down as many reasons as you can think of why it’s important for you to show up and be visible.

That is gonna be the fuel, the emotional fuel that going to drive you to do it – even if you don’t feel like it.

Or it’s going to make you feel like doing it.

Sometimes it’s the case of showing up because you’ve committed.

I show up to do a Facebook Live video every week because I’ve committed to that. Even though I don’t always feel like it. But I have such a big reason for doing it. I’m so connected to my ‘why’ because I’m so passionate about helping entrepreneurs.

I want to help more people to help more people to help more people – because the ripple effect of leaders getting on purpose, the ripple effect of leaders stepping up and being brave and bold and being visible and out there is gonna impact families, impact communities.

So my WHY is so much bigger than me, right?

It’s not about me thinking “What I’m gonna get out of it”. It’s actually when I focus on the message that I’m sharing – when I focus on what’s coming through me as a message, I can get the download and I pour it out.

It’s like a songwriter that’s releasing the song into the world. And then that song becomes everyone’s song.

If the songwriter had held that in, and not been visible, not taken it to their band in its infant stage before it was developed and crafted, then the rest of the world would have missed out on those songs.

I know this because I used to write songs for a band. There was that level of vulnerability when you take your song idea to a band and say “Hey, this is my idea, it’s not fully formed, it’s not fully crafted.”

You’re presenting an idea and you’re throwing it out there for judgment.

Or that art piece, or whatever it is that people who have created it. There’s always an element of vulnerability when we get visible when we put ourselves out there.

There are 2 different things that we can focus on, we can focus on the limiting belief, the mindset, the root cause of what is driving us to feel not good enough, not smart enough, not whatever enough, it’s always about not being enough.

Work on that mindset and we need to chip away that mindset or we can just take action despite that mindset and let the belief catch up themselves.

And beliefs do start to change when we take action and give our brain evidence to prove it wrong.

We’ve got to give our brain evidence that would say it’s actually quite enjoyable to share our message.

If you think about it, you get a captive audience – probably not your friends and family (because they are bored of you talking about business!)

So you can put it into a group or into a business page when you know that people are gonna get helped by it. How much joy is it in that? You get to share your message!

This is probably a big part of why you’re in business – because you want to share your message and have a bigger impact. You want to help people to get inspired. Get on purpose and change their life.

Being visible allows you to do this.

So to strengthen that why you might think “How is my being visible going to get all of my highest values?”

And then you realise – being visible is going to help me help more people. Being visible is going to give me more income. To help me make more impact. It’s going to help me get better as a speaker. It’s going to help me craft my messages.

There are so many benefits. So I recommend that to strengthen that why that you write them out.

That is no match for fear. Love is stronger than fear.

Connect them with your why, with your heart, your passion, your reasons, and NOTHING will stop you from being out there.

So I’m going recap that three ways to overcome your fear of being visible:

1 – Identify the belief driving that fear

2 – Identify the belief that you need to get visible

3 – Strengthen your why

These are the exact steps I took to get myself (a self-confessed recovering people-pleaser, perfectionist, and introvert) out there and successfully running a profitable business.

3 Ways To Overcome Your Fear Of Public Speaking

For most of my life, I didn’t like being seen. I was always so anti-attention growing up.

I went bright red when it was my turn to speak in a group. I hated the teacher asking me something. I even didn’t like my family all looking at me!

Even though I played in a pretty ‘out-there’ all-girl punk rock band for many years, I liked being the drummer at the back. I’d often set up my cymbals to hide away and avoid people seeing me!

Luckily, I learned to overcome this. It took time. I still don’t always love the spotlight, but I take it anyway. Because I know that being a leader and an influencer in my sphere requires it, in order to help others.

I’m so passionate about this is because I was so unconfident for YEARS and I wasted a lot of time and missed opportunities.

I love helping people who have felt even the littlest bit nervous speaking in front of people, but want to speak up because they have valuable things to share.

I particularly love helping entrepreneurs to become more confident, so that they can help more people. When you help a leader, the impact is so much greater.

Over the years I’ve discovered that there are three main problems that people have when it comes to speaking in public.

The first is a fear of judgment. A lack of self-belief. Doubting themselves. Questioning that what they have to say is valuable.

The second is a fear of coming across as arrogant. Over-caring what people think. Not wanting to ‘blow their own trumpet’

The third is a fear of rejection. A fear of not being liked. Or a fear that people won’t show up.

All of these problems are related to mindset, specifically, a fear-based mindset, which is common. These fears stop people from stepping up as the leader and influencer they were born to be.

If you want to become a more effective influencer, it is so important to work on any fears you have of judgment or rejection. They will be a ball and chain that will hold you back from success.

This requires taking action despite feeling fear. We can’t wait for the fear to go away, it doesn’t. We have to act while we still feel it. We only succeed when we are willing to fail.

Confidence is attached to progress, and we only progress if we practice. Publically. We don’t overcome fears sitting in our bedroom.

This freaked me out, a lot. But I realised it was the only way. I was trying to go around the mountain, under the mountain, away from the mountain – when I knew that eventually it was inevitable that I needed to climb the mountain.

If you don’t feel you’re progressing, you’ll start to lose your confidence and stay stuck in fear.

In the words of Coco Chanel:

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” – Coco Chanel

When we don’t take action, we get stuck in over-thinking. Suffering from the elusive ‘perfectionism’ (that doesn’t exist). We internalise all the worries and potential setbacks and over-think everything, instead of just acting.

If we want to grow, we can’t wait for our feelings to change. Our feelings will always try to protect us and keep us safe.

If you don’t start doing the things you don’t feel like doing, you will wake up one year from today and be in exactly the same place.

Confidence comes from taking consistent, courageous action.

So, how did I overcome my fear of public speaking?

I kept putting myself out there, even though it was uncomfortable.

* I played hundreds of gigs

* I competed in figure competitions, where I’d stand in nothing but a bikini

* I ran seminars at my gym, even though I didn’t know what I was doing

* I surrounded myself with encouraging cheerleaders (a.k.a great friends, coaches and mentors).

* I recorded live videos, even though I found it uncomfortable

* I continuously put my hand up at events until I got more comfortable with the spotlight

* I applied to speak at venues that scared me (like the International Convention Centre. Sidenote – I put it off for years and got accepted on my first attempt)

* I went to countless networking events on my own

* I studied ‘How to be confident’ (I realised you don’t learn much by just reading about it hahaha

* I moved to 2 other countries and started my business and social life from scratch

* Lastly – and most importantly, I invested in learning presenting skills. (and realised it was so much easier once I had a structure).

Few of these things were easy to do. Many had challenge attached. Most required me to start small, feel a lot of uncomfortable feelings, fail a lot and take lot of risks.

But every single one has been a stepping stone to becoming a confident speaker and person in general.

I’ve now spoken in front of hundreds of groups and no longer have a fear of public speaking. I still feel some nerves, but I know how to manage them and I reframe them as growth and energy.

I’m so grateful to have awesome friends who are powerful, strong and who aren’t afraid of their presence, personality and ideas taking up big space in the world.

I’m so grateful for my coaches and mentors who have modelled bravery and courage, who have felt the fear and done it anyway….

Those who have continuously fought against fear in order to bring their knowledge, experience, creativity and ideas to the world.

Taking your place in the world feels good. Taking up space feels good. Thriving feels good. All it requires is choosing to take the next brave action on your path.

Whatever your goals are, show the world, and yourself, that you’re serious by taking action, however insignificant that action may seem.
