Productivity Power Tip #1

 

Does your mind ever feel so full - clogged up with ideas, possibilities or concerns, that you don’t know what to focus on?

Do you wonder what to get started on first?

Do you sometimes want to just curl up under a blanket and hope it all goes away?

Here is my productivity tip of the day: The brain dump.

If you're not sure what to work on, or are feeling overwhelmed, the brain dump is my favourite way to ‘clear the decks’.

It’s a simple, yet under-utilised productivity activity.

How it works -

Step 1:

You simply take 5 minutes to write out all the things that are on your mind. I mean, pour it all out. 

Write down everything you can think of - clear it out of your head.

Keep going.

Don’t stop until you have an aching hand if possible!

Externalising is powerful.

It removes thoughts from swimming around inside you, churning up extra blood glucose, which is exhausting!

Step 2:

The next step is to start to roughly prioritise and timeline the tasks out as to when you'll do them

Step 3:

The final step is to take your top 3 priorities and write down the next most simple step for each one.

This helps you to close the open loops in your brain. It can really allow new spaciousness and can unlock the door to your focus and creativity and release new energy.

 

Action Tip:

Take a few minutes now and do the brain dump now!

What Is Ethical Influence?

If you’re a business owner, you no doubt understand the importance of influence.

It’s a major key in sharing with people how you can help them.

But there's a difference between influencing to manipulate people to get what you want, and ethical influence.

What is Ethical Influence?

1. Ethical Influence is about helping people get what they want.

It’s a meaningful conversation that is enjoyable by both parties.

It’s a caring process of supporting someone to make a decision that is going to get them a better life.

Once you really believe that, you will have the boldness to use ethical influence to help people to get what they want.

It’s a win-win for you and your potential client.

A lot of business owners I meet don’t enjoy the process of influence when it comes to selling their services or programs.

They are often scared of rejecting or sabotaging the relationship with the person.

They often avoid having sales conversations or asking for what they’re worth because they don’t want to come across as one of those pushy people, who uses cheesy tactics to try and get people to buy.

Then, their business suffers. Pushiness and cheesy tactics are not using ethical influence.

2. Ethical Influence is about discovery and match-making


It’s all about really connecting with people.

It’s about getting to know them through genuine discovery questions and seeing whether you’re a match for them.

It takes so much pressure off!

You can just relax and have meaningful conversations with people.

IF you’re a match, THEN (and only then) you can show them how you can help them.

This does 3 main things:

1. Reduces any anxiety of you trying to come up with ways to ‘convince’ people to buy, or wonder how to say all the right things

2. Reduces people feeling like you’re being pushy, annoying or only after their money

3. Reduces you being rejected over and over, because you only make offers to people who are interested.

3. Ethical influence helps protect your reputation

Ethical influence is about protecting your reputation - which ultimately comes through helping and sharing, giving and caring.

Compare this to what we see in many spheres of life.

Pushy sales techniques are everywhere.

I recently bought a new car from a dealer. Having learned ethical selling skills, I was curious to see how I would be sold.

The guy was friendly and had a good sense of humour, but a few things caused him to live up to the reputation that some car salespeople have.

One of the first things he said to me was “How much can you put down right now to secure the sale?”

I understand that urgency can be a key factor in decision-making, but this was said very prematurely.

I hadn’t even had a test drive or discussed what I wanted!

The second thing that felt a bit 'yechhh' about was when he walked off to make a phone call to his boss in private about the price.

He said to me “I’ll do some aggressive negotiating on your behalf”.

I’m thinking... ‘Yeah right... Why would you do that? Give yourself less commission??’ It just seemed so inauthentic!

When we were negotiating on the price, I asked if I paid cash that day, could he throw in something for free?

He said he could give me some samples of his network marketing beauty range. Hmmm... As if these aren’t a lead magnet to sell his products. Hardly valuable.

These approaches, in my opinion, aren’t using ethical influence.

Ethical influence to me is not focusing on money in the conversation, but how you can help that person.

It’s more of a long-term approach. It might not get you instant results every time, but gives you a good reputation, which in my opinion is one of the most important business assets that you have.

Once I stopped focusing on myself and my fears and invested into this skill, I realised that I could I make a difference to more people’s lives and help more people to make their dreams come true.

My results soared, along with my confidence and I was able to help many more people to.

I see so many business owners struggling to sign up clients or sell their programs because of fear and because they don't have the right structure or skills to sell authentically.

3 Main Reasons People Don’t Like Selling… and How To Overcome Them


When I first started my own business 15 years ago, I believed:

- Talking to people was fun, but offering my services to them was not

- If people needed my services, they would come to me

- People saying 'no' was a reflection of the current state of the economy, trends in the industry or that my service was a luxury item

- I wasn’t a ‘salesperson’ 

- People saying 'no' meant that I wasn’t good at what I did

In essence, I was just scared. Scared of rejection, scared of losing connection with people, scared of what people thought, scared of investing money in upgrading my sales skills as I thought I was doing alright. 

I believe there are 3 main reasons people avoid selling:

1. They feel like they’re just not good at selling

2. They don't want to come across as pushy or annoying

3. They don't know the best way to ask for the sale

So how do we overcome these avoidance reasons costing us?

1. Realise that it's an irrational fear

Selling can be associated with feeling uncomfortable, facing rejection and not wanting to come across as one of those pushy, annoying people.

A lot of us have had bad sales experiences.

A lot of people have associated the word sales with being pushy, manipulative, money-focused and twisting people’s arm to buy something they don’t want or need.

I totally get it.

But even though it's a common fear, it doesn't mean it's a worthy fear. In fact, I believe it's an irrational fear.

There are bad sales-people out there. Just as there are bad lawyers, doctors, nurses, teachers and marketers. There are dodgy people in every industry. But that’s no reason to avoid facing our fear of rejection and learning the skill of effective selling.

I believe it’s even more reason to learn the skill – so that we don’t come across in that way and so we can break down our own barriers that are stopping us making the big impact that we can in the world.

The fear reduces when we realise that it's irrational and don't allow it to hold us back. 

2. Practice taking small steps

Often we get so close to taking action, but we don't step over the line. We sabotage ourselves.

We download an e-Book, but somehow never get around to reading it.

We hear about a great audiobook or podcast, but we never get around to listening to it.

Or we listen to it, but then think that knowing about sales means we are good at it.

We write 'Make phone calls' on our To-Do list, but somehow it keeps getting pushed to the bottom of our list. 

To help our brain overcome the fear, we need to take regular, consistent brave action. Our brain will realise that we are fine (we didn't die) and the fear starts to diminish.

When we take steps, even while we're still feeling fear, we improve the skill. We increase our confidence. We learn how to make sure that we don't make mistakes and sabotage our relationships and connections with people.

3. Educate yourself

Before I educated myself properly about true ethical influence and sales, I got OK results in my business. I helped a lot of people over the years. But because I didn't spend time learning the skills properly, I limited myself and my potential in so many ways. 

I know now that I could have helped a LOT more people if I had educated myself earlier.

Once I stopped focusing on myself and my fears and invested into this skill, I realised that I could I make a difference to more people’s lives and help more people to make their dreams come true.

My results soared, along with my confidence and was able to help many more people to get what they wanted. 

I see so many business owners struggling to sign up clients or sell their programs because of fear and because they don't have the right structure or skills to sell authentically.
