Why So Many Women Coaches Hate Selling… And How To Overcome It

Does selling feel uncomfortable to you?

Do you ever wonder if it’s possible to consistently enroll more ideal clients without using pushy sales techniques?

In this video, I share how to overcome any dislike or fear of selling you have, and even get to the point of finding it easy and fun.

Does this feel familiar?

· You dread having to sell and would rather someone sign up without having to have a sales call

· You ever feel awkward when you have to ask for money

· You tend to avoid sales calls

I’ve noticed that this distaste for selling is particularly common among women coaches.

Most of the women that I know, myself included, when we got into this industry, learned sales from men. No disrespect to the men. We love them. The strategies can work.

However, for many women, not everything we learned felt aligned to us.

And even though we might see it working, there’s something about it that makes us feel uncomfortable.

I started selling my services 20 years ago. I had left my job working at a telecommunications company to start a business as a personal trainer.

I went to a weekend business boot camp run by the gym where I worked, and I remember the moment I realised that I had to learn to sell.

We were taught to sell using a sales script. I did NOT want to follow a script. But I also didn’t want to fail.

So, I tried the script at the course. But when it came to doing it with real-life potential clients, I left a heap of the questions out. And I rushed the process.

I had a lot of fear of selling and I really did not like it.

I’ve noticed that this is particularly common among women coaches.

I asked a number of my business friends why they think so many women coaches hate selling.

Here are some of the answers I got:

We don’t want to seem aggressive or desperate

We don’t want to reek of desperation

I think there’s actually a mindset that it’s unfeminine to sell.

There’s a common narrative amongst women “If someone has a need, I should just help them.”

Many women are used to kids, friends, and partners turning to them when they need help, so in business it feels more natural to help for free than to sell.

This was from one of my male mentors who I highly respect and doesn’t teach pushy sales:
With men, there’s often more of a focus on money and finance – and more of a mission to get the sale. Most women are typically more caring and empathic, more understanding, better listeners, better at creating emotional connection. Because women are typically so much more relationship-orientated, I think women can be better at sales if they learn the skills.

All of this really got me thinking.

The sales process was primarily created based on the archetype of a salesman selling something like vacuum cleaners or cars.

It’s no wonder we get put off these masculine tactics.

There are so many reasons why the old-school sales methods DO NOT WORK for most of us women.

And what we are selling requires a deeper engagement and level of rapport and trust to create a connection.

Also, because we are selling deeply impactful services, the entire way that we capture hearts and minds is different to many traditional sales techniques.

Many of us have been sold to badly and don’t want to be that person.

I’ve observed that the way that men and women sell is actually quite different.

Our levels of comfort with different types of sales strategies are also quite different.

I was listening to a podcast recently called ‘The Life Coach School’ podcast by Brooke Castillo who was interviewing a lady called Aprille Franks. I heard a line that jumped out to me. It was: “men sell in a more penetrating way, and women are more attractors”.

Masculine energy projects, feminine energy receives and supports.

So, understanding the dynamics from a psychological standpoint on how different most men and women are when it comes to sales and marketing is really helpful.

We are a combination of masculine energy and feminine energy, and I truly do believe that we can bring both in a beautiful and effective way.

We can be who we are and sell in the way that we would appreciate being sold to.

A lot of women coaches know their service is worth good money, but they consistently don’t receive what they’re worth.

While women know that they need to sell in their business, a lot of women will literally sabotage themselves and not sell, or sell to their ability and then feel some resentment towards their business.

In some ways this is less about selling, and more about our ability to receive money.

Something I’ve observed that’s really interesting is that, if there’s no money exchange, as women we are incredible at selling if there’s something we think our girlfriends genuinely need.

I’ve also observed that women are amazing at ‘selling’ people on things – movies, shoes on sale, favourite cafes. Mums sell their kids on doing their homework or eating their veggies.

We are constantly spreading the word about things we like and influencing others.

But when it comes to selling ourselves? Not so much…

Whatever it is that has gotten us here, we have to put a stake in the ground and say “enough is enough”. We deserve to be paid well for the amazing service we provide.

I saw on Instagram recently a video by Sarah Blakely, the creator of Spanx. She shared that in the US, the year women could apply for a credit card without their husbands signature was 1974. It’s so wild to think about this…

And “Do you know what year women were granted the right to get a business loan on their own, without a man co-signing? 1988! What?! Think of all the businesses that could have been started by women before that!”

I think that history and the power that women didn’t have does have an impact on us because of the oppression of women that gets passed down through generations.

So, how do we start to enjoy selling?

It starts with our mindset. If you’re not strong in your confidence and self-worth, you’re going to keep hitting a ceiling.

If you haven’t done the inner work about why this is fear and dislike of selling is coming up, you’re always going to feel like you can’t charge what you’re worth.

You’re going to keep thinking: “Who am I to charge that? I don’t deserve it, I don’t want to be pushy, I don’t want to get rejected” and so on.

So, get coached on it. Getting coaching is the fastest way to shift your mindset.

Most of us realise that our success increases when we’re confident.

And the fastest and easiest way to become more confident is to become more competent. As we become more skilled at selling, our fear shrinks and our confidence grows.

Because if you don’t address your competence, it’s almost impossible to be confident and love selling. And get clients and grow your business to where you want it.

It’s totally possible to learn how to sell your services elegantly, authentically and confidently.

Ask yourself – what specific parts of the sales process do I need to get better at? Do I need to learn more about how to qualify, how to open sales conversations, how to help people with their concerns, how to present our offer, how to close sales?

Get around people who have the skills you want to develop and are making good money from coaching.

For example, if you want to earn six figures a year as a coach, spend time with other women coaches who earn six figures a year. Because that will build your belief.

I used to hate selling, but now I love it. I see it as a great opportunity to help people improve their lives. It is an honour to be part of a woman’s transformation journey.

And I want every woman to have confidence in what she’s selling and have vastly more sales conversations.

Because if you don’t sell, you don’t have clients. And if you don’t have clients – you don’t have the income you deserve and make the impact you want to make.

This is something I’ve helped thousands of women with. And I’m positive I can help you too.

Would you like help to sell your coaching services?

Learning how to sell elegantly and with confidence can be an absolute game-changer in your business.

I offer a free clarity call to see if we’re the right fit to work together to get you the results you deserve.

This call is specifically for experienced women coaches who want to get more ideal clients consistently.

You can book your 15-minute call here

I hope this has been helpful.

Keep showing up, keep sharing, keep shining – the world needs your gifts.

And you deserve to be paid for them.

How To Attract Clients Online, Without Shouting, Chasing, Or Diluting Who You Are

Do you ever feel like you have to shout LOUDER just to be noticed online?

Or feel pressured to CONSTANTLY post on social media to avoid being left behind?

In this video, I share how to attract clients online, without shouting, chasing, or diluting who you are.

If you want to attract more clients in an authentic, genuine way that feels good to you, this is for you.

It’s about feeling confident showing up as you, knowing you never have to compromise your values or integrity to succeed.

You do not have to chase anyone. You can attract the right clients to you naturally and elegantly.

Have you ever had that feeling where someone’s marketing just doesn’t feel good?

It’s almost like they’re trying to trick you or twist your arm.

Think of some of the tactics that you hate being used on you.

Where you have felt like people were manipulating you.

Or that you just felt like a number.

I talk to a lot of women coaches who tell me they don’t like marketing.

If that’s you, it’s not surprising you feel this way. Because we’ve all seen too many examples of marketing that feels gross.

But it can be a problem if we hate marketing, because it means we’re not going to do it to the level we could be doing it.

And we’re not going to get the success and impact we could be getting.

The way a lot of women think they have to be marketing which is putting them off it.

They aren’t marketing to the level they could be, because there’s a fear of being someone that they’re not.

But, when you know how to attract clients elegantly and authentically…

… you’re not marketing AT them, you’re TALKING to them.

… the conversations feel better.

… you feel appreciated and valued.

So, here are 3 things you can do to attract clients online, while being truly authentic, real and effective.

1. Share content that speaks to people’s souls

Content creation should always start with humans.

AI has obviously blown up when it comes to content creation and a lot of us use it because we want to save time.

But time efficiency and doing things faster to produce at all costs has become the goal pushed on us, and the soul can be drowned out.

You have something great to say.

Have people realise how good you are through seeing your marketing.

Share bite-sized pieces from your world consistently.

I don’t think you got into business to outsource your expression, your creativity, your experience, knowledge and brilliance to a robot.

I’ve really been noticing that there’s often a difference between people’s “marketing” and how they talked when they were in the presence of people who they felt safe around.

It’s not that what they share publicly is “bad.” It just doesn’t sound fully like them. It sounds more like some AI marketing bot version of them.

I’m following one coach who is a beautiful human being and what she has to say is incredible. But I’ve been noticing lately that it seems she’s really leaning heavily on ChatGPT.

We’re human around people we trust. And we do “marketing” when we think we have no option but to subscribe to rigid ‘rules’ and ways of being.

Which can suck the creativity and energy out of us and make us sound nothing like ourselves.

Create content that sounds less AI and speaks to people’s souls.

Instead of writing a marketing email or post to warm people up, write a PERSONAL email or post that bring you back to the top of their mind.

Nothing will ever replace your amazing human brain.

The world needs your unique way of expressing.

The more you outsource your content to AI, the less your voice shines through.

Your people need your words in the way that only you can express them.

2. Let people get to know the real you

I know it sounds obvious. We hear ‘just be yourself’ as if it’s the easiest thing in the world to do.

But it’s actually one of the hardest things to do.

Especially on video. Because believe it or not, it actually takes time and effort to be able to show up truly as ourselves.

When I started doing Facebook lives, I was not being fully myself. I was being a percentage of myself.

I was trying very hard to say the right things and put the perfect words together.

The people who love what you share want you to be even more of you.

What you stand for needs to be obvious.

Create content for the people who will recognise your brilliance and uniqueness and respect you.

You cannot impress everyone. Your job in marketing is not to try and impress everyone.

Your job is to compel the right people to you and repel the wrong people away from you.

So, lean into the bits that make you unique.

You have to be yourself so the people who are looking for you can find you.

3. Show People That You Get Them

If you want to attract amazing clients that you love working with, you need to show people that you get them.

This is one of the fastest ways to build trust.

We can’t assume that people trust us. We need to constantly create ways to develop the trust people have in what we say.

When I’m mentoring someone who is finding it challenging to attract clients, I observe that this ingredient is often missing from their content.

Anyone can just spout off theory, but people want to know about your personal experience.

Sharing stories about your own personal experience is going to build more trust.

We develop trust when we provide value consistently.

People start to get to know you better and feel safe with you – they trust you to be a valuable source of content.

You can show that you really get them by showing that you’ve journeyed the journey. Show them that you understand them.

The best way to do this is to spend a lot of time with our ideal clients.

The only reason that I attract clients consistently is because I hang out with my ideal clients all the time.

I’ve been coaching for so long that the conversations and the patterns that I see with the real-life people that I’m working with help inform and inspire my marketing.

If we’re not having regular touch points with clients consistently, it’s really challenging to understand people what their problems and needs are.

We’ve got to show that in our content.

So to recap, when you…

1. Share content that speaks to people’s souls

2. Let people get to know the real you

3. Show People That You Get Them

…you don’t have to shout, chase or dilute who you are.

You attract the right clients to you and you enjoy it.

I hope this has been helpful.

Keep sharing, keep shining, the world is waiting for your words.

5 Powerful Ways To Grow Your Following On Social Media

How do you grow your audience when not enough people know who you are?

In this video, I share how to grow your audience online, even if you’re starting from absolute zero.

You probably realise the importance of growing your followers online.

Your audience consists of people who will buy your services and potentially recommend you to other people.

But a lot of coaches struggle to grow their audience because…

  • They think have to share perfectly polished, professional content
  • They need to get loads of engagement, or what’s the point?
  • They get stuck in over-thinking and end up sharing minimal content

The truth is, we all start with no an audience, and share content when it feels like no one cares.

But every piece of content you create adds up and step-by-step it all starts to make a difference.

After working with thousands of business owners, I’ve found that what matters the most when it comes to growing your audience is having a way to develop trust with your audience.

So, how do you grow your audience when not enough people know who you are?

Here are 5 powerful ways to grow your following on social media:

1. Be a leader

If you want to get more followers, you have to think of yourself as a leader.

The best leaders lead with their followers in mind.

When it comes to the way you show up on social media, are you thinking about it as what you feel like sharing or what your followers really want?

To get more followers, start by thinking why should anyone spend their energy following me?

What followers crave the most are trust, authenticity, compassion, and hope – encouraging them to believe in a better future.

2. Be original

In an online world now saturated with AI, originality stands out.

This is about showing people the real you.

You don’t need to be like someone else, you need to be more of yourself.

So many people are copying other people.

People can usually tell when it’s not genuine because you don’t talk about it in a confident, certain way like you would if you came up with it yourself.

Being original takes courage. Because not everyone’s going to like it, and that’s okay. Marketing is about attracting the right people and repelling the rest.

And then you get the right people into your business, and life becomes super exciting.

3. Be impactful

Add impact everywhere you show up.

Impact is like a bridge that connects us towards or away from the results we want.

We have the powerful ability to impact the people who read or hear our words.

The way we show up and how much thought we put into our words impacts people and what we say has the power to literally be life-changing.

Take the time to tap into your incredible creative brain and craft your words on social media in a way that inspires action.

Intentionally transfer your consciousness to your audience and watch the right people engage and the wrong ones fall away.

4. Be specific

A lot of content I see online is vague.

We can’t make much impact when we’re not speaking specifically to the people we are best suited to serve.

Back in the day, we could be more broad, but now, because of the saturation online, if you want to get and keep people’s attention, you have to speak very specifically to them.

It’s important when people see your content on social media that they are clear on exactly what you do and how you help people.

Do a little mental check right now. Think about your website, your social media profiles, your comments that you’re putting online – are you speaking very directly and very specifically to your ideal client?

We can’t impact people unless they feel like we get them.

5. Be valuable

Deliver value wherever you go.

Value meets people where they’re at and shows them a world that’s possible for them.

People who willing and generously share their organised knowledge without asking for anything in return are the ones who stand out online and steadily grow their following.

When use these principles to grow your following on social media, you can connect better with potential ideal clients and attract more of the right people that you can help, into your world.

And what that ultimately means is that you can help more people, make a greater impact, and have a valuable asset in your business.

Would you like to know how to apply this in your business so you can get more clients?

I help people to grow their following on social media, grow their email list and get more clients consistently.

We do this by using compelling content with clear, unique messaging that speaks directly to your ideal clients.

Send me a message (link to my messenger from super signature) and let’s chat about what you need and how I can help you.

Keep showing up, keep shining, and keep sharing, the world needs your words.

The Mid-Year Momentum Reset

Happy mid-year!

Being halfway through the year, it’s the ideal time to pause, reflect, and make any adjustments you want to for the second half of the year.

By checking in on where you are and where you want to be, you can carry forward valuable insights and lessons into the upcoming months.

In New Zealand (where I grew up), they have a public holiday halfway through the year.

It’s called Matariki, which is the Māori name for a cluster of stars, the rising of which is recognised by many of the country’s Indigenous people as the start of the new year.

It’s focused on 3 things:

* Remembrance of the past

* Celebrating the present

* Looking to the future

In this video, I share a walk-through of a tool I created called ‘The Mid-Year Momentum Reset’:

You can access ‘The Mid-Year Momentum Reset’ document here.

If you go through the process, you should feel reset, proud of yourself, and inspired for what you want to create in the next 6 months.

Let’s take a quick look at the key highlights…

⭐ The “What’s-Good Snapshot”: A moment to capture and celebrate your accomplishments so far.

⭐ The “Growth Reflection” process: Extract key learnings from the year so far, to propel you forward into the second half of the year with wisdom and clarity.

⭐ The “Reframe Method”: A simple, powerful way to reframe what’s happened and move forward with joy.

⭐ The “Feel-Good Future”: Plan and envision an extraordinary 6 months ahead to awaken your excitement and inspiration.

⭐ The “Project Planner”: A process to map out your projects and create your game plan for the rest of the year with focus and efficiency.

I like to go to my favourite café and do this, or go out into nature and sit with my journal under a tree and reflect.

When I did this activity, it brought a lot of new fresh energy, clarity and excitement for me.

I also like doing it with other people because it’s really nice doing it together with a conversation.

It helps you feel more focused and you can bring the learnings and wisdom from your past intentionally into your future and decide what you want to leave behind.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to check in, reset your momentum, and set up an incredible second half of the year.

I’d love to hear how it goes for you, and you set yourself some incredibly exciting plans for the second half of the year.

Would you like some support in achieving a goal or project?

Such as bringing in more clients, launching an event, or being more consistent on social media and you want some help knowing where to start?

I want to invite you to a call with me to talk about how I can help you with it.

In the session, we’ll get clear on what’s blocking you, and I’ll help you map out a plan to move forward.

If you’re curious, let’s jump on a Zoom call and have a chat.

You can message me to arrange a chat here

I would love to help and support you to achieve what you want.

How To Run Member Events That Keep Your Clients Engaged & Help Them Get Great Results

Would you like to know how to run member events that keep your clients engaged and help them get great results?

Member events are a great way to…

  • Offer additional value and support to your clients
  • Nurture and strengthen your relationships with your clients
  • Facilitate deeper connections among members
  • Encourage and support clients to take action, achieve better results, and feel inspired
  • Invite guests to the unique experience of being part of your community

A member event is a place where people come to take part in live activities – and a place where they go deeper into learning that goes beyond the curriculum in their program.

I started running members events for my clients in 2018 and I’ve experimented with a lot of different things over the years.

In my recent mini Masterclass, I shared things that have worked really well, and also some of the things that haven’t worked so well, so you can learn from my mistakes.

You can watch the video here

I’ve put together 10 top tips to help you run successful member events:

1. Create an event rhythm

I have tried many different things over the years, and I now run my member events every quarter.

I invite guests to get a taste of the experience – they get 1 member event for free.

You might like to start with a half day or one day event, and then progress to a two or more day event.

Decide what works for you and your business and lifestyle.

2. Create like a Coach

I always recommend that you create your content with your coaching hat on.

As coaches, we’re usually really good at helping people see things a different way, transformation and breakthroughs.

So, thoroughly thinking through what is going to lead someone to a breakthrough is so important.

Then craft the journey for them throughout the event, using structured questions and activities that stir their minds and hearts.

It’s important that we shift perspectives and get people thinking, as well as evoke emotions and get them feeling to encourage expansion and growth.

I include mindset pieces in my workshops, because I know that’s the main area where people get stuck and where they often need the most inspiration.

3. Create a Playbook

A playbook, also known as a workbook or manual, is a valuable tool designed to guide participants through the event. It provides structured activities, resources, and information to enhance their learning and engagement.

To create an effective event workbook, consider the following elements:

  • Welcome Message: A brief note welcoming participants and setting the tone for the event.
  • Content: An outline of the event’s key topics.
  • Notes Pages: Provide ample space for participants to jot down notes, thoughts, and ideas during the sessions.
  • Links to connect with you online
  • Action Plans: Include sections where participants can set goals and outline steps to achieve them.
  • Inspiration: Include motivational quotes to inspire participants.

The Benefits of a Well-Designed Workbook:

  • Enhanced engagement: Keeps participants actively involved in the event.
  • Better retention: Helps participants remember and apply what they’ve learned.
  • Structured learning: Provides a clear framework for following the event.
  • Personalisation: Allows participants to personalise their learning experience and take meaningful notes.

By incorporating these elements, an event workbook can serve as a comprehensive guide that enhances the participant’s experience during the event and provides a valuable resource for continued learning and application afterwards.

4. Create connection & make everyone feel welcome

Your audience is usually thinking…

(mostly unconsciously)

Is this a safe space?

Will I feel welcome and fit in?

Can I trust what is being said?

Is this going to be a good use of my time?

Make sure you open the event with a welcome that makes people feel at home, clearly and kindly explaining the guidelines and protocol, and letting people know your expectations and values, such as fairness in sharing in breakout rooms.

The clearer and more specific you are in your event promotion, the more you’ll get the right people in the room.

5. Encourage engagement

We want to make sure we use the chat box wisely and well. Right at the beginning of the event, I let people know how we use the chat box in the event so everyone is clear.

I personally like the interaction and people making comments.

However, frame it at the beginning so people know the rules and guidelines, such as, not dropping links, not posting questions, privately message the crew, etc.

Let people know if it’s ok to have their camera on or off.

We have a lot of breakout rooms in our events which people love.

Clearly explain how the breakout rooms work. In sharing activities, I explain who is to kick off, how long the time is etc.

6. Give Gifts & Prizes

We all love gifts and prizes. I award brave and vulnerable action and interaction.

I reward with my one-on-one time as well as an Oscar trophy called ‘Goldie’ that I award in every member event to someone who has been particularly interactive, taken brave action or supported others in some kind of way.

I also give a prize to the person who writes the most inspiring review and another for the most helpful feedback in the feedback form.

7. Create Mastermind breakout sessions

True masterminding is a collaborative and structured approach where people come together in a small group to share knowledge, support each other, and work towards achieving a goal.

They are super powerful and people love this part of our events.

The concept is based on the principle that collective intelligence and mutual support can lead to greater success than working alone.

The way I structure mastermind sessions is by having a set timeframe for each person, for example 8 minutes, where they have time in the hot seat to present a question to the group and get support.

I set it up by sharing some of the things that they could use the mastermind session for, give them some time to think about what they’re going to ask the group, and also give them tips for how to maximise their time. For example, keeping their explanation short, encouraging people to ask follow up questions if they need more clarity, and keep their question very clear and specific in order to get more quality answers.

A crew member broadcasts a message to the breakout room letting people know when it’s time to switch to the next person.

A mistake I’ve made is not repeating myself multiple times so that everyone fully understood. You need to say things very clearly, very simply and very step-by-step, repeatedly.

Make sure you have clear and organised guidelines and explain things very thoroughly and simply, and repeat things a number of time so everyone is on the same page.

8. Have Crew Members to assist

It’s important to have people assisting you at your events. Please don’t do events on your own! It’s important that you can focus on presenting.

Make sure you have clear crew roles and that everyone knows what they are doing – such as dropping links and page numbers, answer questions, sharing the screen, and organising breakout rooms.

Make sure you train them and have a meeting before. We usually meet the night before as well as 30 minutes before the event.

9. Choose content that people typically get stuck on, so you can help them with it

Based on your online course and the training curriculum that your clients are following, hand-pick the parts of the curriculum that do best in a group setting with discussion, and the things most people have questions about. That way I can really dive in with them, help and support them with it, and they can also get inspiration and help from others.

Think about things that are beneficial to do in a group and come alive through discussion and practice.

For example, in my group, we practice presenting skills, speaking to camera, sales conversations, and sharing content and marketing ideas.

10. Have live activities that focus on demonstration and implementation

One of the mistake I’ve made in the past is including too much teaching content. It took me a long time to learn that one. I have stripped it back a lot over the years.

Include less, and go deeper.

Ideally, demonstrate what you’re working on with someone so they have a real life example.

Make sure there’s plenty of time for people to do the activities or at least get started on them and then explain how to get it finished in their own time.
