The definition of influence is the ability to be a compelling force, or to produce effects on the actions, behaviours and opinions of others.
How powerful are we as humans! We can positively impact the people in our world.
Influence can show up everywhere – it’s not just in your website, brochures or social media content – it’s about the way you show up.
It’s about who you’re being with your team, your clients, your peers – it affects every touch point you have.
It’s the work you do on your external and internal world to show up as a brand that people want to do business with.
Though influence is so powerful, the skill of influence is something that not a lot of people take the time to actively develop.
And it’s not just about influencing, it’s about doing so in a way that’s authentic and elegant.
If you could improve your influence skills in your business, what impact would that make for you?
Elegant influence is a skill that inspires people to make decisions and take action on the things that are aligned to their values.
It’s a skill that will help you get in front of more of the right clients, help more people and make a bigger impact.
Here’s a simple, 3-step formula for using elegant influence to get more clients:
1. Speak to their instincts first
This step involves communicating in a way that resonates with the primal instincts of the audience.
Instinctual communication is simple, clear, and directly relevant to the audience’s immediate needs or desires. It’s about addressing the most fundamental aspects of human nature that drive decision-making.
To speak to instincts effectively, we should:
- Keep our attention-grabbing message concise and straightforward.
- Use questions or statements that prompt immediate engagement.
- Avoid complexity and jargon that may overwhelm or confuse the audience.
- Make the content relatable to the audience’s everyday experiences.
2. Evoke their imagination and emotions
In this step, the goal is to create a vivid mental picture or evoke strong emotions within the audience. By tapping into their imagination and emotions, you can make your message more memorable and impactful.
This step involves storytelling, visual imagery, and empathetic language that connects with the audience on an emotional level.
Key strategies for invoking imagination and emotions include:
- Using storytelling techniques to paint a picture of scenarios or experiences relevant to the audience.
- Incorporating sensory language to engage multiple senses and make the content more immersive.
- Appealing to emotions, such as joy, fear, hope, or empathy, to evoke a strong emotional response.
- Encouraging the audience to visualise themselves benefiting from the message or taking action.
3. Appeal to their intelligence
The final step is to appeal to the rational and analytical aspects of the audience’s thinking. This involves presenting logical arguments, evidence, or reasoning that support the desired action or decision.
While instincts and emotions provide initial engagement, appealing to intelligence provides the rational justification needed for the audience to take action.
To appeal to intelligence effectively:
- Provide logical reasoning or evidence to support the claims made in the message.
- Highlight the benefits or advantages of the proposed action in a clear and logical manner.
- Address any potential objections or concerns the audience may have and provide solutions or reassurance.
- Encourage critical thinking and decision-making by presenting information in a structured and coherent way.
By following this 3-step formula, you can create messages that resonate with your audience on multiple levels, leading to greater influence.
