7 Reasons You May Be Struggling To Get New Clients

Would you like to build a profitable business doing what you love?

I believe it's currently the best time in history for you to create a lifestyle business. There are opportunities everywhere for you to connect with your ideal clients and help them solve their problems.

There are more entrepreneurs than ever out there absolutely smashing it and earning a huge income helping people, and of course there are a huge amount of entrepreneurs who are broke.

I know you're probably reading this because you want to share your message in a meaningful way. You want to make a difference doing what you love and help more people. And you want to work with your ideal clients and build a business that aligns with your ideal lifestyle.

If so, this is for you. I want to show you 7 potential roadblocks that are currently tripping you up or could trip you up in the future if you're not aware of them.

Here are 7 reasons you may be struggling to get new clients:

1. Not enough focus on D.P.A - Dollar-producing activities

This was by far my biggest problem when I first started my business.

In my recent blog 'How to Avoid the Perfectionism Trap' I shared a story about when I moved to London and started working at a new gym. I had no clients and no money and it was in the recession.

I'll always remember that lesson about how getting clients is about focusing on the dollar producing activities, like making offers, not the fun stuff like creating a logo, business cards, brochures or hanging out on social media.

The single defining factor in your success is how you spend or invest your time.

Sometimes we can feel that we're doing things that matter, but really we're just doing 'busy' work. Productivity means you actually produced something. Dollar producing activities directly lead to you making dollars.

2. No clear goals with deadlines

One of the main reasons I see people not producing the results they want is that they don't have clear, specific goals with deadlines attached.

We all know that when our brain is left to its own devices without clear commands and instruction, it takes the path of least resistance.

I had 'Write a blog' on my to-do list for years (still do) and barely managed to get it done consistently.

The single thing that got me to take action to produce regular content for my ideal clients was booking workshops. I'd book the venue, pay a deposit and then I HAD to run the workshop.

Or I'd decide on a date for a webinar, make it public, and that would give me the incentive to produce the content. I'll easily let myself down but I don't like to let others down.

Once you create contents for things like workshops and webinars you can leverage it everywhere.

If you struggle with inspiration for your organic content, create an event, book a date, set some deadlines and you’ll create more amazing content than you ever have before.

You need to fail fast, get things out the door as fast as possible and refine as fast as possible. A lot of people won't do this because they're scared of looking bad. But you can't be afraid of failure. It's the only way to truly learn and grow fast.

3. Lack of structure, systems, and support

Something I see a lot is incredibly well-educated people who have a lot of experience and knowledge in a range of modalities, but where they get stuck is joining all the dots together and making it work.

They don't have the structure or the systems in place behind the scenes.

If you lack structure, systems or support, you’ll struggle to be successful. Business is too hard to do without these things. They are crucial. All profitable business owners know this.

4. Being unwilling to invest enough time or money

I’ve had so many people over the years tell me that they’re not getting clients. I ask what their marketing strategies are and discover they haven’t spent a cent on Facebook ads, or they’ve put down $20 for one campaign, it didn’t work so they gave up.

A lot of people are brilliant at the modalities they teach, but not brilliant at business. Unless you want to work for someone else for the rest of your life, you must invest the time and money on learning business skills.

You need to know how to market yourself effectively, use social media profitably, write influential content, position yourself and your brand properly, know how to invest time and money and a range of other different skills.

The good thing is, everything is what I called overcomable. It's all workoutable!

Every skill you need to learn in business, you can learn. Business is a skill just like learning to cook or drive.

5. Not working with enough clients

There are two categories that most people fall into that are struggling to attract enough clients. Firstly, they haven't worked with enough people and they want to charge too much from the get-go without having enough experience or skills to charge that amount. So people don't end up signing up.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are people who are severely under-valuing themselves.

They wonder "Who am I to charge for this? I love it! It comes easily and naturally to me!"

The main reason they do this is because they have unconscious competence around their genius zone. They assume everyone can do or knows what they do and so they don't value it enough.

Another reason people don't work with enough clients is that they are scared of rejection. So they offer cheap prices or don't charge at all, then people don't value them. Or they can't make enough profit to sustain their business so they end up stuck in a job they're not passionate about.

6. Having too broad a niche

Having a vague or broad niche is definitely one of the biggest reasons why people struggle to get clients. They try to be all things to all people. They don't understand that marketing is about attracting some people and repelling the rest.

You know the old saying - if you try to chase 2 rabbits you'll catch none.

If you want to get great results for people, it's better to be a specialist rather a generalist.

Here are some examples of the difference between a broad niche and a micro niche.

Broad Niche:

“I help people improve their mindset and motivation”

“I help people improve their health and fitness and create a happier life”

“I help people create a thriving business”

Micro Niche:

“I help busy women declutter their homes in 6 weeks or less”

“I help busy Mum’s to improve their energy and reduce their stress with simple-to-follow exercise programs they can do at home”

“I help Coaches and Trainers to build a 6-figure lifestyle business”

One word of caution - don't let choosing your micro niche be another trap that stops you staying in action.

It takes time to develop your micro niche. It took me years. But don't let that stop you from moving forward.

If in doubt, choose 'you' a few years ago, before you learned what you learned to overcome a problem you'd love to help people solve.

Just decide and get out there and help people.

7. Giving up too easily

Business can be simple, but it's not always easy.

I bumped into a friend recently who had done her coaching course at the same time as me back in 2014. I ask her how her coaching is going and she says “Oh, I have a lot going on at the moment” which we all know is really code for “I’ve given up for now”

The truth is, it's never really the right time. I procrastinated for years on creating a lead magnet and a funnel and kept buying into the story that I didn't have time. But that's not true.

The reality was that I did have the time, it’s just that I didn't think I did.

I've been running my own business since 2003 and I estimate literally thousands of challenges that I've had to overcome and hundreds and hundreds of little things I've had to learn. You simply have to make one decision - to not give up!

When you delay your decisions, you delay your dreams. Life is always going to be busy.

If you think it's going to get easier the longer you wait, it's not. Things get harder not easier when you delay them.

If you know that having a business you love helping people is part of your destiny, and you feel you have it in you to do it, do it now!

How To Attract Your Ideal Clients

Building your business is not for the faint-hearted. You need to be great at what you do, have a great offer, and the resilience to push through when the going gets tough.

More than anything, you need the ability to attract clients. Which is where many people get stuck. This article will show you the 5 step formula to attracting your ideal clients.

Client Attractor #1: IDENTIFY

The first step is to choose ONE Avatar, your IDEAL client.

You don't want to spend time and money on marketing before you have decided your ideal client. It’s important to narrow your attention and focus on ONE target market (at a time).

Many people start creating offers or content before they are clear on the ONE type of person that they want to attract. This is a huge mistake that I see all the time. It is SO worth doing this work up front – it will save you a lot of time later!

Take your time really getting clear on this person and understanding them. It will help you in every aspect of your marketing, including your sales letters, lead magnets, and all of your content creation.

Client Attractor #2: LOCATE

Where does your ideal client spend most of their time online?

Where your ideal client spends most of their time online is where you need to be providing them free content and adding value for them. This is so they can get to know you and what you are all about.

Depending on your ideal client, for most service-based business owners, I recommend you start with Facebook, then add Instagram and either LinkedIn or Youtube, you can leverage the content across all platforms.

Where does your ideal client spend most of their time offline?

Networking events can be a great way to meet your ideal clients. Make sure you go with the intention to give, serve and build relationships. You can use MeetUp or Eventbrite to see what people are doing in your location.

Client Attractor #3: CAPTIVATE

In this stage, you need to captivate your ideal client consistently and systematically by educating and inspiring them, so they want to take the next step with you – and receive value in the meantime.

Strategy Examples:

Your own original, valuable content including quotes, helpful captions on Facebook and Instagram, writing articles and blogs and sharing on LinkedIn, doing live videos, writing helpful comments in Facebook groups etc.

Client Attractor #4: OFFER

Now that you know who you want to work with, it’s time to create an irresistible offer for them.

Offer Creation Template

To come up with the offer, use this simple 5-step process:

1. Do a brain dump of the most important things you can teach your ideal client

2. Rewrite the list in order to create a clear path for them

3. Decide your period of delivery time (e.g. 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months etc.):

4. Decide your delivery method/s:

Delivery Method Options:

* One-to-one e.g. private coaching sessions

* One-to-many e.g. presentations, workshops, webinars

* None-to-many e.g. Evergreen webinar, online course, membership site

  1. Decide any other valuable resources you can offer them and create a package.

Client Attractor #5: INVITE 

Now that you have created a great package, it is time to create a way to invite them to take the next step with you. One of the best ways to do this is to create an awesome freebie that your ideal client will get value from.

A freebie – also known as a ‘lead magnet’ is one of the most important and effective ways to generate and capture leads. Lead magnets are an incentive you offer to potential buyers in exchange for their contact information.

This can be done in the online locations you have decided on, such as on your Facebook group and page, Instagram, LinkedIn and via email.

You need an opt-in that attracts quality leads and build trust by helping people solve a problem, implement a strategy, or by giving them a useful tool or resource.

There are different types of lead magnets, but I recommend you do an easy-to-consume downloadable piece of content. I recommend a cheat-sheet or checklist.

All five of these steps are crucial to get right to make your client attraction efforts a success.

How to Avoid the Perfectionism Trap

Do you struggle with perfectionism?

Me too. Even when I was choosing the image for this blog, I found myself taking too long with it and had to stop myself and just decide.

I used to think of perfectionism as a good thing, as something to be proud of.

That was until I learned that perfectionism has a mighty cost.

I used to play in a band called Foamy Ed (check us out on YouTube if you want a laugh!) from 1996 – 2008 and was one of the main songwriters.

My bandmates would often be asleep in studios on couches at 3 am while I meticulously made sure every note, every beat, everything I could was absolutely refined and the best it could be.

Band practices were consumed with “Let’s play it again” and I knew it was really hard on them at times.

While my high standards did help bring us a certain level of success, I know that I was annoying. I’m sure my perfectionism stifled a lot of creativity and caused frustration that was unnecessary and sapped some of the joy of our jams.

Perfectionism is caused my many things, but one of them is low self-worth. It’s an unconscious drive to produce great work because we think that our worth is linked to our work.

My perfectionism stemmed from not feeling smart enough and trying to compensate by putting ridiculously high standards on myself and others.

The problem with perfectionism is that when you are caught up trying to make something perfect, it can:

* Delay your work going out into the world - work that can help people and bring beauty, inspiration and value

* Cause us to devalue what we create if it doesn't meet the standards

(It's a toxic loop)

* Set standards that are impossible to meet

* Create feelings that we are flawed and therefore, what we create is not valuable or worthy.

People with perfectionism tend to believe that they should never make mistakes and that making a mistake means they are a failure or a horrible person for disappointing others.

Thinking like this makes it really scary to make mistakes.

Trying to be perfect is likely to make you feel stressed and maybe even disappointed with yourself much of time because you are not able to meet your standards easily or at all.

It's important to note that perfectionism is different to excellence.

Striving for excellence shows you have a good work ethic and strength of character. Holding high expectations of yourself and high standards can also push you to reach your peak level of performance.

Avoiding perfectionism is not about doing rushed or sloppy work. There's no excuse for that.

Some companies launch a bit too soon. But taken to an extreme, a no-mistakes-allowed mindset can block creativity.

Most people don’t launch soon enough. There is a sweet spot. A time when you need to surrender and launch.

Reid Hoffman – the founder of LinkedIn said this scarily true statement:

“If you’re not ridiculously embarrassed by your first release, you launched too late”

If you want to keep improving, it’s got to be near enough.

It wasn’t until I started to get really busy in my business that I realised that perfectionism was costing me and I had to stop it. It’s also been many, many Coaches who have made the biggest difference in changing my mindset.

I've really appreciated their 'get it out there' energy.

I remember when I moved to London and started working at a new gym. I had no clients and no money and it was in the recession. I desperately needed to make money. I decided that my first step was to print off some marketing brochures.

I asked the Manager at the time where there was a printing shop and he said to me (I'll never forget it!) "F*^% the stationary Kat, get on the floor and talk to people!"

I was initially a bit shocked and thought I knew better, that I needed to have promotional material first, but I look back now and know he was right.

I'll always remember that lesson about how getting clients is about relationship building, not about a beautiful logo, business cards, brochures or a perfect-looking website.

Now, when I find myself trying to get every single PowerPoint slide perfectly aligned, I check in with myself and ask myself if this is the best use of my time. More times than not, it isn't.

Perfectionism still tries to creep in and I battle with it constantly. But I fight it. I go at it and refuse to let it dig its toes in. Most of the time.

It’s a work in progress for sure.

I was even tempted not to check for poor grammar this article, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

(If you spot any typos, pretend they were deliberate and celebrate with me!)

Again, I remind myself not to strive for perfectionism in the journey to avoid perfectionism!

A recent article in ‘Psychology Today’ states ‘…being a perfectionist isn’t about things being perfect; it's about thinking things need to be perfect and vigilantly pursuing it.’

If you’re wondering when things will be finished – they won’t be. Every day you are changing things and making them better.

As one of my favourite teachers, Benjamin J Harvey says “The road to success is always under construction”.

He always says “I’ve never met a single artist who thinks that their painting is completely finished. The painting is already on the wall and they want to add another stroke.”

If we have to constantly re-earn or re-prove our worth - even if it’s to ourselves - we run on a never-ending treadmill of external achievements that will not bring us deep, lasting joy.

It is worthwhile to consider loosening up your standards a bit to ease the stress and anxiety you may feel from trying so hard to be perfect.

 

Here are some steps to help you overcome perfectionism:

1: Learn to be aware of perfectionism

This is an important first step. Remember, there is nothing wrong with having high standards, but when these standards are too high, they can really get in the way of your work, study, relationships, and enjoyment of life.

Consider these questions to help you figure out whether perfectionism is causing problems in your life:

  1. Do you have trouble meeting your own standards?
  2. Have you been told that your standards are too high?
  3. Do your standards make it difficult for you to meet deadlines, finish a task, trust others, or do things spontaneously?
  4. Do you say things that set you up for failure, like “If it can’t be done right, what’s the point?”
  5. Do you struggle with excessive checking of your work, especially when the stakes are low?

For example, rewriting everything to constantly make it better or spending ages checking every detail over and over on an email or document that doesn’t have a high-stakes outcome?

2: Replace critical thoughts with helpful thoughts

One of the most effective ways to overcome perfectionism is to replace self-critical or perfectionistic thoughts with more realistic and helpful statements.

For example:

“I’m doing the best I can with the resources I have”

“It doesn’t have to be perfect, just done”

“My worth doesn’t come from my work”

It really helps to practice saying these helpful statements regularly.

Even if you don’t believe them right away, enough repetition will help turn positive realistic thoughts into a habit and crowd out the negative self-talk.

3: Decide which tasks are worthy of spending more time on and which tasks are not

If we are investing our time trying to make everything perfect, there will be a whole heap of things that don’t get done. We simply can’t make everything excellent, all of the time.

It’s important to triage items and invest our time on the ones that matter most.

Here are 3 questions you can ask yourself to help you do this:

1. How high are the stakes on this task?

For example, spending time practicing a presentation you’re going to deliver to some potential clients is a good thing to spend time on.

Spending hours making every colour and formatting on your PowerPoints perfect may not be.

2. Am I the best person to be doing this task?

Basically, can anyone else do this task that is taking me ages better than me?

3. What are some clear standards I can set around my daily decisions?

I have just a post-it note on my wall that I look at daily that says this:

“What’s the best use of my time right now?”

“Am I doing a task that only I can do?” (this one is rather convicting – there’s so much we do that’s outside of our genius zone and can be outsourced)

“I only do tasks that are scheduled”.

Deciding ahead of time how you’re going to decide to invest your time saves you a lot of wasted time in the long run.

Choose your modus operandi – your default way that you want to do things in your life and start practicing operating out of it.

Perfectionism is such a trap. 'Done' is always better than sitting in your laptop until it's perfect, not helping anyone.

Whatever we are labouring on will never be perfect, and that's not only ok but perfect.

How to Become a Successful Coach

In part 1 of this 3-part blog series, I posed three questions that are useful to ask yourself if you're thinking of becoming a coach.

In part 2, I shared 7 reasons why it's an amazing time to become a coach.

So, you've decided you want to be a coach. Where do you start? Here are 7 steps.


Step 1. Realise that you don't have to quit your day job

Becoming a coach is not about taking a giant leap. Many people believe they have to give up their day jobs to make coaching a career. That’s not true. Doing that could set you up for failure.

For most people, coaching is something to pursue on the side, at least at first. It takes time. Which makes it an ideal transition career to pursue.

Coaching is a perfect supplement to other work. You can build your knowledge, skills and experience while you are still in your 9-5 job. Or if you're a service-based business owner already such as a Chiropractor or Personal Trainer, it's an ideal arm to add to your existing business as you already have clients who know, like and trust you.

I have always used coaching alongside other work and I love the variety. Some people want to be full-time coaches.

For me, I like doing a range of things including running events and teaching. Eventually, I will be doing more travel, circuit-speaking and have a podcast and online course.

Step 2. Get educated

Coaching is a craft. Too many people decide to be a coach then focus all their energy on branding and trying to build an audience without spending any time on the craft of coaching. You need to be a great coach first and foremost.

One of the best ways to become a great coach is to do a coaching course.

The diversity of coaching and mentoring means that everyone will have a different route to becoming a coach.

I recommend you find a course that has a live element and a strong community attached.

Step 3. Decide what kind of coach you want to be

What kind of coaching do you want to do? What kind of people do you want to work with?

If you say you want to coach everyone, you will be invisible.

Pick something that you believe you will be great at coaching someone in. For example, business, relationships, health etc.

Think about your personal story and what you’ve overcome.

What are your gifts? What area of life are you the most passionate about?

Start there.

Step 4. Practice. Practice. Practice.

So many coaches want to start charging instantly because they think that will make them more credible. What makes you credible is your experience, confidence and how good you are.

Don’t focus on the money right now or how many clients you have. Focus on building and getting better.

Coach as many people as you can. Do it for a minimal fee or free. The payment for you is becoming a better coach.

Step 5. Decide your ideal client

This is the part of your business where you decide your ideal client – your avatar. It’s important to narrow your attention and focus on ONE target market (at a time).

Many people start creating offers or content before they are clear on the ONE type of person that they want to attract. This is a huge mistake that I see all the time.

Step 6. Locate and captivate your ideal clients

Where does your ideal client spend most of their time online?

Spend most of your time there.

I recommend that you choose a maximum of three places and do it well.

Depending on your ideal client, for most people I recommend Facebook, Instagram and either LinkedIn or YouTube.

The next step is to patiently and systematically educate and inspire potential clients through helpful content so that they want to take the next step with you – and receive value in the meantime.

Content Examples:

Your own original, valuable content such as quotes, helpful captions on Facebook and Instagram, writing articles and blogs and sharing on LinkedIn, doing live videos, writing helpful comments in Facebook groups etc.

Step 7. Invite your ideal clients to take the next step with you

Step 7 is about inviting your ideal clients to engage with you.

I recommend that you create an awesome freebie that your ideal client will get value from.

There are different types of lead magnets, but often they are a 1-1 discovery call or a downloadable content piece such as a valuable cheat-sheet, checklist, video series, or another type of strategy guide that is helpful for them.

So there you have it – 7 steps to getting started as a Coach.

7 Reasons Why It Is An Amazing Time To Be A Coach

In Part 1 of this blog series, I posed three questions that are useful to ask yourself if you're thinking of becoming a coach.

If you answered yes to these questions, you may be a very good candidate for being a coach.

 

So let me tell you why it is an amazing time to be a coach.

1. The demand for coaching is growing

Our desire for better mental health is getting greater and greater.

As time goes on, coaching will become more and more mainstream.

So the timing is perfect when you look at the internet and our ability to go online and offer coaching from our own home. You can actually make a very healthy six or seven figure income as a Coach. And you can do it without having to have a best selling book and without having to have a building where people come to.

Coaching has become more mainstream, so more people are actively looking for a coach and the need for coaching is greater than ever.

2. Being a coach means you get paid to help people

It's one of the most rewarding things to be in a profession that helps people grow. To see other people change because I’ve worked with them is the most rewarding thing I can imagine doing.

You get to get paid for helping people. You get to make an awesome living. A living that is very lucrative and helps people and the planet.

To be an authority in your client's life as a mentor, as a coach, is one of the highest privileges that we have as coaches.

3. Being a coach helps you understand yourself

Coaching is the ultimate personal development journey. It helps you understand yourself so much better, which in turn improves your relationships with others and the world around you.

Another reason why I love being a coach is that it requires an understanding of the mind.

I think the mind is the most important thing we can study. Our mind thinks thoughts, which shape our lives, so we must get good at understanding thoughts. I think is one of the most important things we can focus on.

Being in an industry that focuses on the mind all the time is so cool. It’s incredible to be a part of that.

4. Being a coach keeps you creating and growing

One of the reasons I absolutely love being a coach is it keeps me out of just consumption and keeps me in the role of being a contributor and creator. It’s important to balance your consumption with your creation and your contribution.

And so I love being part of something that is always asking me to contribute and to grow and to create for my students and for clients.

It requires me to continue to become a better person and that is so rewarding.

5. As a Coach, you get to work in the privacy of your own home

Working from home is ace, y'all.

As coaches we get to make our own schedules, we don't have to spend time in the car commuting if we don’t want to. We get to be in charge of our own day and how we show up within our own homes.

My coach friends and I are always like, pinching ourselves like, is this really our life? Is this really the work we get to do? Are we really part of something so incredible? Our Great Grandparents would be amazed!

6. Celebrities are endorsing coaching

I know, I know, just 'cos others are doing something doesn't mean that we should. But if you like the benefits of the first five reasons, this one is an icing on the cake.

Some of the most famous people in the world have hired coaches and gone on to talk about the experience. These include Oprah Winfrey, Metallica, Serena Williams, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Clinton, Hugh Jackman, and Andre Agassi.

Bill Gates supported coaching when he said, "Everyone needs a coach. We all need people to give us feedback. That's how we improve.”

Just like so many other things, celebrities are often the first to start a trend.

If you're worried that there are too many coaches out there, this reason shows that more and more people are hiring coaches and that's not going away.

7. Coaching can create dramatic changes in people’s lives

Coaching has been known to save people’s jobs, marriages, health, peace of mind and much more.

Coaching plays a huge role in helping one of the most concerning things that's happening in our culture - the increase of addictions. People need help with their unhealthy addictions which they’re turning to avoid their feelings.

People who are addicted to social media, drugs, junk food, cigarettes, gambling, over-eating, pharmaceuticals, pornography, video games - all these addictions can lead to greater problems like stress, poor health, panic attacks, depression and anxiety. It is becoming an epidemic.

As coaches, we can help people with some of these things and lead them into healthy, happy lives, which has a beautiful flow-on effect into their families, friendships, workplaces and communities.

There is no limit to the help that the world needs right now.
